Damask is a very special fabric used for centuries in an ages old technique that creates a pattern that is raised from the surface of the material. It is beautiful, unusual and beloved by women around the world.
Damask comes from the Arabic word "dimashq", which many of us know as Damascus, the capital of today’s Syria. In the 12th century, the city of Damascus was a major trading centre along the Great Silk Route. It was here that European traders first encountered the fabric, though the technique used to produce it is much older than that. [1]
Damask can be made of silk, wool or linen. Most of ours are silk and wool. When it is woven, weavers only use a single color. It is up to the raised design to define the images. Today, using a Jacquard loom, allows the artist to control individual weft threads. This makes it possible to weave such intricate patterns as you will find on our Damask bags.
Upkeep of Damask your bag is simple. We personally just drop it at the dry cleaners. They are experts in fabrics of all kinds and wont damage your bag while getting it back to clean.
